Opening Notes
"And I think about those people who mean so much to me...."

As ghoulish goblins give way to giblet gravy, and leaves leave bright colorful messes on our lawns, it won't be long before we again hear those days-before-Christmas countdowns that have us scrounging up savings and scurrying to stores in hopes of finding the perfect gift for each and every loved one and friend.
For many of us it's a reflective month also, a time for looking back and counting all the blessings we've accumulated, both big and small. Often they're found in the commonest things or most ordinary places, where usually they can evade our notice. But not now. Somehow we see familiar faces in a new light and are especially thankful that they're there.
This month's article looks back even further, to 1975. For Richard and Karen Carpenter it was one of the busiest and most turbulent years of their careers. Karen's health, cancelled tours, a presumptuous opening act, and relatively poor record sales were all new challenges, but ones they both faced with their usual extraordinary poise and resolve. (Coincidentally, last month's auctions include several pieces of memorabilia from this notable year.) Thankfully, the Carpenters overcame these challenges and went on to make several television specials and many new records.
Among the things to be thankful for, too, are the efforts of Richard and Karen's numerous fans who have worked admirably and diligently to keep the memory of the Carpenters vibrant and alive. Their active discussions across the Internet have helped both new and not-so-new fans alike learn more about the Carpenters and sustain broad interest in the duo. This month's Sites & Sounds highlights just some of these open and friendly discussion groups.
Even in these trying times there's still much to be very thankful for. It makes having to get out and rake all those leaves really seem not so bad.
      Happy Thanksgiving!

      Dan

Lyric of the month
SOMETIMES
(from the A&M album, "Carpenters" SP-3502)
(Henry Mancini - Felice Mancini)
Northridge Music, Inc. (ASCAP)
Sometimes not often enough
We reflect upon the good things
And those thoughts always center around those we love
And I think about those people who mean so much to me
And for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten to say "thank you"
And just how much I love them
