Close to You Two: The Duo's Sidemen
by Dan
"The guys" who are part of the Carpenters sound

Behind every great duo is a band. Professional musicians and singers whose talents complement those of the group's stars and make them shine more brightly. Their contributions are part of the sound of every memorable recording.
Here Carpenters won, hands down, the respect of their peers. The duo had a reputation for surrounding themselves with the best in the business. Whether in the studio or on tour, they always could be counted on to give their listeners a highly musical performance, one rarely if ever matched in pop.
Certainly the brother-sister team itself was the focus of every performance and primarily responsible for the group's unique sound. In addition to vocals, Richard Carpenter played piano and other keyboard instruments, Karen Carpenter drums and percussion. Karen also played some bass on the duo's debut album, Offering, and both played vibes in "Boat To Sail" on A Kind Of Hush.
Supporting the siblings on their recordings were some of the finest musicians ever assembled in the studio, including several of the industry's most renowned session musicians. More than a few of them accompanied Carpenters on tour. With their instruments as well as their voices, they helped the duo faithfully recreate in concert the same sounds their audiences fell in love with on the radio.
Collectively, Richard and Karen affectionately referred to them as "the guys." The artistry and talents of these Carpenters sidemen have been tremendous; and each has been credited over the years on one or more of the pair's major albums. Their names, in order of appearance on those albums, are all listed here with their respective credits:
